Finals set in Heartland Championship

Mid Canterbury and Thames Valley will meet in the 2025 Meads Cup final, whilst Horowhenua Kapiti will host North Otago in the Lochore Cup final next weekend. 


The Meads Cup final is a repeat of last year’s, which Thames Valley won 37-29 in Te Aroha.

Thames Valley booked their return to the big dance with a 61-31 thumping of South Canterbury in Timaru this weekend. 


Tied 24-24 at the break, the Swampfoxes pulled away in the second half with 37 unanswered points, led by four tries to number eight Aporosa Vuniyayawa. 


Elsewhere Mid Canterbury edged Wairarapa Bush 21-19 in the second Meads Cup semi-final in Ashburton. 


Trailing 12-21 at the break, Wairarapa Bush came close to a late resurgence, scoring the only points of the second half but ultimately falling just two points short. 


In the Lochore Cup, Horowhenua-Kapiti required extra-time to beat Whanganui 40-18 on the road at Cook’s Gardens. 


Horowhenua Kapiti’s success ended a nine-game losing run against the Butcher Boys, returning to the Lochore Cup final for the first time since 2018. 


In the second semi-final, North Otago beat  Poverty Bay 48-46 in a high-scoring thriller in Oamaru. 


The Meads Cup final is scheduled for next Saturday afternoon in Ashburton, whilst the Lochore Cup final is scheduled for Sunday in Levin, both with 2:05pm NZT kick-offs.
