White Ferns batting struggles as England win first T20

The White Ferns have been dealt to by England in the first T20 international by seven wickets at Derby.


New Zealand were put into bat and scored 136-7 which was far too short as the home side reached their target with 16 balls to spare thanks mainly to an unbeaten 74 from Alice Capsey.

The White Ferns struggled from the first ball as Georgia Plimmer dragged an inside edge onto her wickets for a golden duck.


Captain Melie Kerr managed eight before she was caught leaving Sophie Devin to rescue the side with 45 off 22 balls included four sixes and four fours.


Devine fell in the ninth overwith the score at 70-4 leaving Maddy Green and Izzy Sharp to consolidate the innings and they both managed a run a ball to get New Zealand through to 136, Sharp 26 not out and Green 23.


The best of the England bowlers were Lauren Bell who had 2-23 and spinner Charlie Dean 2-29.


The White Ferns gained a couple of early wickets, however 21-year-old Capsey and the experienced Heather Knight managed to get the home side back on track and they were able to keep up with the required run-rate.


Capsey hit 74 coming off 51 balls and included ten boundaries, Knight made 19 and Freya Kemp 31 not out.


Bree Illing took 2-19 from her four overs.


Game two is at Canterbury on Sunday.
