Barry ranked 726 was beaten 6-2 6-1 by 84th ranked Ella Seidel of Germany and was emotional at the end of the match after she said she had trained well and wanted to make the best of the opportunity.

“I think, just a bit disappointed that I know my level, and it didn't show today, and the last couple of years, it has been showing,” said the 23-year-old.

“I love playing here and I love the crowd, but I just didn't feel like anything was really working.

“So it was a little bit frustrating. I wish I could have shown people a little bit better.”

“It's just the expectation of yourself,” she said.

Meanwhile Watt won his first round singles match (he'd earlier completed two victories in the qualifying) over Leo Vithoontien of Japan 7-6(5) 6-1 in one hour 33minutes nailing 10 aces in the process.

Watt will play former top-20 ranked Bernard Tomic (Australia) in the second roun.

Later Watt teamed up with Finn Reynolds as seconds seeds and beat wildcards John Bruce Smith (Australia) and Antonine Voisin (Tahiti) 6-3 6-2.
