Three set first round losses for the two New Zealanders at the Birmingham international tournament to start the grass court seasons.
James Watt was beaten by British wildcard Harry Wendelken after earlier coming through qualifying.

The 227th ranked Wendelken won by the scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3) in two hours 25 minutes over 25-year-old Watt.
Watt and Finn Reynolds play the top seeds Santiago Gonzalez (Mexico) and Frenchman Sadio Doumbia, both top 50 players in the doubles main draw in the next couple of days.
In the women's WTA 125 draw at Birmingham Lulu Sun lost to American Maria Stoiana ranked 146 by a score of 6-4, 6-7 (8), 2-6. The match taking two hours 26 minutes.
