Samipeni Finau leaving Chiefs for Japan

Chiefs loose forward Samipeni Finau is leaving the franchis and Super Rugby to take up an opportunity with Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan.
Finau was an influential member of the Chiefs since making his Super Rugby debut against the Highlanders in 2021, becoming known across the franchise for his physicality, versatility and powerful presence.

Born in Tonga, Finau attended St Peter’s Cambridge, represented Waikato, and came through the Chiefs Under-20s pathway before establishing himself in the Gallagher Chiefs.
His performances aw him earn higher honours in 2023, when he was named in the All Blacks squad becoming All Black #1211.
Finau made an immediate impact on the international stage, scoring on Test debut against Australia in Dunedin as the All Blacks came from behind to win 23-20. He has since gone on to represent the All Blacks 12 times.
Acknowledging his five years with the club Finau shared his respect for the jersey

Chiefs Rugby has several international departures following the 2026 season with Xavier Roe, Etene Nanai-Seturo, Lalakai Foketi, Liam Coombes-Fabling and Reuben O’Neill having also confirmed their movements overseas.
