Just one match into the new Premier League campaign, Chris Wood is already in mid-season form.

After scoring 20 goals last term, Wood hit the back of the net twice in the first half as Nottingham Forest opened with a 3-1 victory over Brentford at the City Ground on Sunday (Monday NZ Time).

The All Whites captain poked home his first in the fifth minute from a set piece. After he was bumped off an attempted header from a corner, the ball fell in front of him, guiding the ball into the net as he fell backwards.

New high-price Swiss signing Dan Ndoye put the Cherries up two in the 42nd minute, then Wood gave them a 3-0 lead in first-half stoppage-time.

Following a turnover near halfway, Elliot Anderson found Wood with a bullet 30m pass. He rounded Caoimhín Kelleher and slotted into the empty goal.

The 33-year-old Kiwi was one of four brace scorers in Round 1, matching Tottenham's Richarlison, Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.

Wood is chasing down 100 Premier League goals this season, looking to become just the 35th player to do so. He reached 91 (for Leicester City, Burnley, Newcastle and Notts Forest) against Brentford.

Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh last season to qualify for the Europa League, travel to Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park next Sunday (Monday NZT).
