Venus semifinal defeat US Open doubles

New Zealand tennis player Michael Venus and Indian doubles partner Yuki Bhambri have been beaten in the semifinals of the men's doubles at the US Open.


As 14th seeds Venus and Bhambri lost to British sixth seeds Neil Skuspki and Joe Salisbury in three sets on the Louis Armstrong court in an enteraining match lasting 2 hours 53 minutes.

Venus and Bhambri won the first set in a tie break 7-6 (2), lost the second in a tie break 7-6 (5) after being up a break 3-1 before Skupski and Sailisbury won the third 6-4.


It is the most successful US Open for Venus with his previous best result the quarters the previous year.


Venus won the 2017 French Open title with American Ryan Harrison and was a finalist at Wimbledon in 2018 with South African Raven Klaasen.


On Saturday fellow kiwi Erin Routliffe and her Canadian partner Gaby Dabrowski will play the women's doubles final on Arthur Ashe Stadium prior to the men's singles semifinals.


The New Zealand and Canadian duo will take on top seeds Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic and Taylor Townsend of the US.


The winning combination will take home US$1 million (NZ$1.7m) to share, while the runners-up will earn US$500,000.


Routliffe and Dabrowski won the US Open doubles title in 2023 and reached the 2024 Wimbledon final.
