A difficult day for New Zealand tennis players at the top level with a couple of close-fought defeats at WTA and ATP tournaments.


At the WTA 125 tournament in Austin, Texas Lulu Sun went down to Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-1, 7-6(6) in the second round in just under an hour and a half.

Sun ranked 100 had four set points in the second set and a number of other opportunities during the match against Badosa who has been ranked as high as No 2 in the world.


Sun beat top seed Emma Navarro in the first round of the tournament.


At the ATP Challenger at Cape Cana in the Dominican Republic the Kiwi doubles pairing of Finn Reynolds and James Watt who are both ranked 81 in the world had a rough first up clash.


They were up against veterans Brazilian Marcelo Deoliner and Romain Arneodo (Monaco) but lost 7-5, 6-3 in one hour 21 minutes.


The Kiwis served three aces against their opponents zero and had a good first serve percentage of 73% but converted just two of their five break point opportunities compared to their rivals five from five.
