Surman departs Nix for Major League Soccer

Central defender Finn Surman is leaving the Wellington Phoenix for Major League Soccer

The Wellington Phoenix have lost another one of their promising young players with confirmation defender Finn Surman is moving to Major League Soccer.


Surman, 20, featured in all 29 matches last season for the Phoenix and will now join the Portland Timbers.

He has also played five times for the New Zealand All Whites, including the recent OFC Nations Cup.


Surman's contract with the Phoenix was until the end of the 2026 season, with a club option for 2027.


The centre-back follows Phoenix teammates Alex Paulsen and Ben Old in securing a transfers overseas following the Nix's 2023-24 season in which they fell one step short of reaching the A-League grand final.


Surman is currently in Paris with the New Zealand OlyWhites ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
