Six-time Indycar champion Scott Dixon is a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) for services to motorsport in the New Year Honours list.


The 2008 Indy 500 winner was born in Australia, Dixon grew up in Manurewa and has been based in the US since 1998.

Dixon needs just one more championship victory to equal the record of AJ Foyt. Widely considered the greatest ever motor racer to come out of America, Foyt holds the Indycar record with seven titles.


Dixon will turn 46 next July as he targets a record-equalling seventh championship.


Other New Zealnad sportspeople to receive honours include runners, Rod Dixon and Lorraine Moller, lawn bowls Val Smith, former Black Cap Martin Guptill.


New Zealand motorsport icon Tony Quinn who helped Liam Lawson start his career was recognised as was Shirley Hooper from netball and Greg Barclay from cricket and rugby.


Former Basketball NZ CEO Iain Potter was also recognised.
