Kiwi driver Liam Lawson will start sixth on the grid at Formula One's Las Vegas Grand Prix after staying clear of trouble and get the best out of Racing Bulls car on a tircky circuit under lights and in the rain.


Lawson finished behind Red Bull driver Max Verstappen who is second on the grid, but ahead of team mate Isack Hadjar in eighth while Yuki Tsunoda who was eliminated early.

Lawson, 23 had a best lap of 1 min 49.062 sec in Q3 and will be on the third row for the race that starts at 5pm on Sunday (NZ time).


When he finished that lap he was the third-fastest but a mix up with his crew saw him slide to sixth.


Starting sixth means Lawson takes his second top-10 start in succession, after qualifying and finishing seventh in Brazil earlier in November.


McLaren's Lando Norris the drivers championship leader took pole ahead of Verstappen and Williams Carlos Sainz.


George Russell will start fourth and Oscar Piastri fifth/
