Usually a centre Foketi’s first Super Rugby appearances were with the Melbourne Rebels, before a return to provincial NZ rugby with Bay of Plenty.

Representing Australia on the international stage earning nine test caps, the move marks a pivotal moment for Foketi.

“I’m really excited to be coming back to where it all began and be a part of the Chiefs family” he says.

“A massive thank you to everyone in the organisation for allowing me to come back and test myself to be a better player and person in 2026. I can’t wait to get stuck in”

Chiefs Head Coach Jono Gibbes said the addition of Foketi will bolster the teams depth in the midfield for their upcoming 30th year.

“Lalakai is a quality player who brings international experience and an understanding of what Chiefs Rugby is all about” Gibbes continues, “We’re excited to welcome him back into our environment and look forward to seeing his maturity play out both on and off the field”.

Foketi has had an impressive professional career across New Zealand, Australia and France having represented Melbourne Rebels, Bay of Plenty, NSW Waratahs and Aviron Bayonnais.

Now 30, he returns with a connection to the pride that comes with wearing the jersey. He will join the full squad in November ahead of pre-season preparations.
