Dixon wins IndyCar in Detroit, Armstrong third

New Zealand driver, Scott Dixon survived the carnage at the Detroit Grand Prix take his 58th career IndyCar Series win and there was another kiwi celebrating too.


Dixon once again provided a master class in devising tactics on the fly with strategist Mike Hull and saving fuel in his No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, prevailing in a caution-strewn Detroit Grand Prix on the streets of the city.

Six-time IndyCar series champion Dixon beat fellow Marcus Ericsson into second with countryman Armstrong third 4.9 seconds back for his first career podium finish.


Dixon took the championship lead with his second victory of the season, joining his win in April at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.


He earned his 58th career victory, pulling him within nine wins of tying A.J. Foyt’s record of 67 career wins.


The third of the New Zealand drivers, Scott McLaughlin was 20th.
