Half-centuries from Stephen Doheny and Lorcan Tucker and a cameo from Mark Adair delayed the inevitable for Ireland in their defeat by an innings and 79 runs against New Zealand.


The home side begun the third day in Belfast on 65 for 2, following on with two more days to play and trailing by 246 runs.

They were bowled out for 232 in their second innings, with Blair Tickner taking his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.


Rain brought an early end to the first session as Ireland were reduced to 131 for 5.


Nathan Smith - who had taken a six wickets in the first innings removed nightwatcher Thomas Mayes within the first five overs of play. A full inswinger had Mayes edging to second slip.


Doheny eventually made 57, wicketkeeper Loran Tucker 50 and Adair 44 not out.


Tickner's figures in the second innings were 5-76 from 17.2 overs with three maidens. He was also involved in a runout with Devon Conway.


Smith had 2-53 to go with his 6-40 from the first innings while Zak Foulkes took the other wicket to fall in the Ireland second innings.


They now head to London, where they will prepare to face England in a three-Test contest.
