He hit three birdies an only one bogey on the front nine but had only one birdie and two bogeys on the back nine. American J.J. Spaun won the tournament with two stunning shots that carried him to his first major championship. He used his driver on the 314-yard 17th hole on to the green for a birdie that gave him the lead. Needing two putts from 65 feet on the 18th to win, he finished this storybook week by holing the longest putt all week for birdie and a 2-over 72. That made him the only player to finish under par at 1-under 279. It gave him a two-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre of Scotland. It made Spaun, the 36-year-old Californian a major champion in only his second US Open. The rain that put Oakmont on the edge of being unplayable might have saved Spaun. One shot behind at the start of the day, he opened with five bogeys in six holes. And then came a rain delay of 1 hour, 37 minutes. Spaun recovered as so many others fell apart. Meanwhile on the Ladies European Tour Amelia Garvey finished third at the Hulencourt Open in Belgium. She carded a final round 66 to finish nine-under to finish four shots behind the leader Darcey Harry of Wales.

The Steel are currently fourth on the competition ladder, equal with the third-placed Central Pulse on competition points and separated only by goal difference. The Steel went down to the Mystics by just one goal in their last encounter. "We're coming off a bit of momentum the last few rounds and I feel like we're in a good place. We're growing in confidence each week in our attacking game and honestly feeling really good about it. "We've had to win our last few games to be in contention for the top three. We need to approach this the same way, but continue to lift like we've been doing."
