New Zealand's Liam Lawson has finished sixth driving for Red Bull but was not overly happy at the result at the Spanish Grand Prix.

An equal-best F1 finish and his 10th top-10 finish of the season he improved two places from his start of the race.

Lawson, 24 impressed in the early stages in Madrid, passing Franco Colapinto for sixth before a virtual safety car, triggered by Lance Stroll's retirement, changed the strategic picture.

He started on the hard tyre with the intention of extending his opening stint, Lawson was unable to take advantage of the VSC in the same way as several drivers around him.

His sixth-place finish keeps Lawson ninth in the drivers' championship which is headed by Mercedes Kimi Antonelli who won in Madrid ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen with McLaren's Lando Norris third.

The next Formula One Grand Prix is Azerbaijan 24-26 September.
