Erika Fairweather has missed out on defending her world title after she was disqualified for moving on the blocks at the World Aquatic Championships in Singapore.

She clocked 4:03.39 in 400m freestyle at the world champs which would have put her sixth into the final.

Fairweather is the only New Zealand swimmer to be seeded at the meeting. She will swim in the 200m freestyle where she is ranked eighth.

Last year Fairweather, 21, captured the title at Doha in 3m 59.44s, as superstars Ariarne Titmus (Australia), Katie Ledecky (USA) and Summer McIntosh (Canada) were absent.

She would later finish fourth behind that trio at the Paris Olympics, just 0.26s behind Ledecky for bronze.
