Evans, Cassidy just miss Formula E title

Another tight finish for Mitch Evans in Formula E with a second place finish in the drivers standings

Another season and another near-miss for New Zealand drivers, Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy in Formula E.

Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein from Germany won the drivers title after a second place in the final race of the series in London as the Jaguar pair of Evans and Cassidy saw their hopes disappear.

The trio went into the final round with seven points separating them.

Cassidy had done everything right to fight his way back into the picture after a disastrous, pointless Portland and a qualifying struggle on Saturday in London. He recovered from 15th to an eventual seventh at the flag in race one whereas Evans was second and Wehrlein first.

In the second and final race it was a forgettable driver for Cassidy, who was hit from behind by German Max Gunther and was forced to retire with a puncture.

It left Wehrlein and Evans to contest the title but the New Zealanders' hopes weren't helped when his "attack mode" - when drivers give their car a power boost - didn't work at a key moment late in the race.

Britain's Oliver Rowland was able to steer to a maiden home win comfortably in the end, with second enough for Wehrlein to seal an emotional maiden Drivers' World Championship by seven points over Evans - Cassidy ultimately winding up third having led into London.

Evans, hampionship finishes have been second, third and third over the three previous seasons.

The consolation for Jaguar was a first title in top tier motorsport since 1991 with the Teams' World Championship.
