New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox has carded a mixed first round of three-over 73 at the US Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina.

Fox was tied 68th with just a few players remaining to complete their rounds.

Starting on the back nine he birdied the 11th and fifth, but hit bogeys on the 13th, second and seventh with double bogey on the on par four 14th hole.

Fox is eight back from the lead held by Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy with a five-under 65's.

Only 14 players were under par with the final few holes remaining.

Nineteen years ago kiwi Michael Campbell won the US Open at Pinehurst becoming just the second male New Zealand winner of a Major. Sir Bob Charles won the other, the British Open in 1963.
