An injury to 2024 Olympic gold medalist Olivia Brett has meant a step back to competition for Dame Lisa Carrington.

Thirty-six-year-old Carrington who was not meant to be paddling internationally this year has joined the team in Italy and will race in the K4 at the 2025 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Milan later this month.

Nathan Luce, CRNZ General Manager of Performance, says the team is handling the unexpected change with resilience.

“This is a really tough situation for Olivia, and our thoughts are with her as she begins her recovery. CRNZ will support her every step of the way to get back on the water."

Brett has returned to New Zealand for treatment.

“We’re fortunate to have someone of Lisa’s calibre available to step in. While she hasn’t competed internationally this year, she’s maintained full-time training and is in race-ready form," said Luce.

Carrington has 15 gold medals at World Championship level and eight at Olympic Games

The regatta will be held 20-24 August.
