The Hurricanes have confirmed that first-five Brett Cameron has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the club for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

Set to enter his fifth season with the Hurricanes, Cameron is excited to return to action next year as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury sustained during this year’s season-opener against Moana Pasifika.

“I couldn’t be happier to be back at the Hurricanes for another year. I’m very grateful for this opportunity and backing from the coaches and club after what’s been a tough couple of years for myself with injuries,” Cameron said.

“I’ve been right at home with this team since I started in 2023. It’s a special group to be part of and I’m working harder than ever to be back ready for the 2027 season.”

The Whanganui-born playmaker brings a decade of first-class experience and plenty of championship pedigree to next year’s Hurricanes squad.

Part of Canterbury’s 2017 Mitre 10 Cup-winning squad in his debut provincial campaign, Cameron also claimed the Ranfurly Shield in 2019, and won two Super Rugby titles and two Super Rugby crowns while with the Crusaders between 2018 and 2021.

A move to Manawatū was followed by a season-long spell in Japan with the Kamaishi Seawaves, before a return to New Zealand saw Cameron join the Hurricanes ahead of the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Since then, the 30-year-old has scored 149 points in 25 matches for the club and added a Super Rugby Pacific title to his name as part of this year’s Hurricanes squad.

Internationally, Cameron played one test for the All Blacks during a win over Japan in 2018 and made an appearance for the All Blacks XV against the Japan XV in 2023.

Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw is thrilled to retain Cameron and praised his resilience after facing two significant knee injuries in as many years.

“We’re just delighted to have him here. He’s obviously had a very tough couple of years with two major knee injuries, but he’s a genuine inspiration in terms of how he has dealt with both of those injuries,” Laidlaw said.

“Particularly the second injury, which he got in game one this year and started a lengthy rehab process while we were playing. His ability to come in everyday, crack on with his rehab, and contribute to the team was amazing.

“We’re really proud of him for being able to cope with that because it’s not been easy. We just hope that his body allows him to play the rugby we know he can. We genuinely feel like he’s still got growth in his game and the ability to play Super Rugby, which hasn’t diminished in our eyes.

“To add him alongside Ruben, Harry, and Callum keeps us super strong at first-five and fullback between the four of them. We look forward to BC getting into pre-season and continuing the really good progress he’s making. We’re all hopeful he’ll be ready for the start of the season.”
