The Black Caps have won the first ODI against the West Indies at Hagley Park in Christchurch in a game which went over time thanks to slow bowling from the visitors.

The home side scored 269-7 with the West Indies needing 20 runs from the final over and falling just short at 262-6 for New Zealand to win by seven runs

LATEST HEADLINES:

Daryl Mitchell scored the majority of New Zealands runs with 119 from 118 balls batting with an injury.

He came to the crease at 24-2 after opener Rachin Ravindra and Will Young were out in successive balls, both caught behind by Shai Hope, off the bowling of Matthew Forde.

Mitchell and Devon Conway put on 67 for the third wicket before Conway went for 49. Michael Bracewell then made 35 in a 69-run stand.

Zak Foulkes was the next best with 22 runs from 16 while Tom Latham made 18 and captain Mitchell Santner chipped in with 11.

While the Black Caps batting was inconsistent the visitors all got starts. Six players went past 25 runs and even extras reached that mark.

Sherane Rutherford was the best with 55 while Justin Greaves was not out 38 and Rmario Shepher not out 26.

Kyle Jamieson took 3-52 from his 10 overs while Santner and Matt Henry had the same figures of 1-46 from 10.

The second game is in Napier on Wednesday.
