Christchurch amateur golfer Yuki Miya is in a place no one expected at the 105th New Zealand Open at the halfway stage of the tournament.


Twenty-year-old Miya holds a one-shot clubhouse lead over fellow Kiwi Daniel Hillier and Australians Travis Smyth and Wade Ormsby.

"Obviously, there is a long way to go, still 36 holes to play. Just do my best, keep sticking to my processes and we'll see how the result goes,” said Miya.


Meanwhile world number 100 Hillier fired a three-under par 68 and is 11-under overall, Hillier carding an eagle, four birdies and three bogeys.


New Zealand's Kerry Mountcastle is fifth at 10-under.


Reigning Aussie champion Ryan Peake's set to miss the cut, currently set at two-under ... Peake's even par.
