New Zealand beaten by Poland, tennis great

The New Zealand Billie Jean King Cup team has been beaten 3-0 by the home nation in Gorzow, Poland.


Although a defeat it was an experience for the team in front of a passionate crowd featuring mutli-Grand Slam winner and current wold No 2 Iga Swiatek.

Vivan Yang, 20 lost to the experienced Katarzyna Kawa, who is ranked 124 in the world by the competitive scoreline of 6-4 6-4 with a couple of breaks in the New Zealanders favour, but three against her.


It was then 21-year-old Elyse Tse ranked 909 against Swiatek who is 907 places higher and was the winner 6-0 6-1.


Tse never gave up fighting and at 3-0 down in the second set, won a game on her serve, putting down a few serves that Swiatak struggled to get back.

Swiatek won 50 of the 64 points contested between the and broke on five separate occasions, with Tse lifting her arms in celebration after her sole hold of serve when 6-0, 3-0 down.


In doubles Erin Routliffe and Jade Otway losing to Linda Klimovicova and Martyna Kubka 6-2 6-2.


Routliffe’s serve was broken at 2-3 in the opening set and two games later Otway’s serve was also broken.


New Zealand went a break down early in the second set and Otway’s serve was broken once more at 2-5.


The New Zealand team will take on Romania Sunday morning (NZT).


Lulu Sun was named in the New Zealand squad but was forced to withdraw injured.
