New Zealand's Erin Routliffe and Canadian Leylah Fernandez have lost their third round women's doubles match at Roland Garros.

The pair were beaten in an hour 23 minutes by the Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk and Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-1 6-4 on Court Simonne-Mathieu,

The European pair raced out to a quick lead in the match to take a 5-0 lead before Routliffe and Fernandez got on the scoreboard, however that was just one game in the first set.

In the second set it was a reversal as the kiwi and Canadian pair were able to quickly move to a 3-0 lead.

There was a change of momentum when Fernandez lost serve .in the fifth game as Kostyuk and Ruse fought their way back to lead 5-3 with some big hitting.

Routliffe and Fernandez came back with a hold of serve from the Canadian to keep the match tight but the Europeans were able to once again win the points that mattered and take the match.

For third ranked Routliffe the result is an improvement on last year's first round effort and will keep her confident for Wimbledon in a few weeks.

She will team up with Michael Venus in the mixed doubles quarters against second seeds Laura Siegemund and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.tonight.
