Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox is well off the pace after his first round of the PGA Tour's FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis.


It's the first tournament for Fox since his memorable victory at the Open Championship.

He carded an opening round three-over 73, putting him in a share of 60th in the 70-strong field.


He's eight shots back from four Americans tied for the lead, including Jordan Spieth. Fox is one stroke ahead of world No 2 Rory McIlroy.


Fox made the turn at one-under the card, but then double-bogeyed six on the 11th hole followed by three more bogeys in the final seven holes.


The Aucklander now has a world ranking surged to 22nd which is well in FedEx Cup contention.
