First round doubles wins for Venus, Daniell

Both New Zealanders have won their first round matches at the French Open after lengthy rain delays caused a massive backlog of matches


Daniell who is in his return to the French Open after a couple of years away due to injury teamed with American Mackenzie McDonald to beat Dustin Brown (Jamaica) and Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (3) 6-3 in 79 minutes.

They now face ninth seeds Mario Pavic (Croatia) and Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador.


Thirteenth seeded Venus and Jamie Murray easily won their match over Spanish opponents Pedro Martinez and Jaume Lunar, 6-1 6-2 in a match that lasted just 62 minutes after breaking their opponents serve five times.


They play the French pair of  Lucas Pouille and Gregoire Barrere in the second round.


Erin Routliffe and Leylah Fernandez’s first-round match in the women’s doubles will be played overnight against the Chinese team of Guo Hanyu and Jiang Xinyu.


Meanwhile, Venus and Routliffe are the No 6 seeds in the mixed doubles and have been drawn against Chinese Taipei’s Chan Hao-Ching and Hugo Nys from Monaco in the opening round.
