"Hell of a fight. Hell of a match, but at the end of the day and there has to be a winner, and it wasn't us, unfortunately," said Daniell.

"It sucks to lose matches like that. But those sort of matches which are really fun they are an absolute dogfight. As its the last grand slam match I'm going to play it's pretty fun to play a match like that. It was fun and it was brutal," said Daniell.

The 34-year-old originally from the Wairarapa, who claimed bronze at the Tokyo Olympics with Michael Venus, won five career titles and was a Grand Slam doubles quarterfinalist on three occasions..

In contrast, Venus won his first round match, combining with Britain's Neal Skupski to defeat the French team of Hugo Gaston and Gregorie Jacq 6-3 6-3.

Venus and Skupski will now face Andreozzi and Balaji for a place in the third round.

Meanwhile, world No 1 Erin Routliffe and Canadian Gaby Dabrowski will play their first round women's doubles match on Thursday (Friday morning NZT), while Lulu Sun is leaving it until the last minute to try and be healthy for her doubles match.

Sun is set to partner Xiyu Wang from China against a Brit and Slovak team, however, Sun is still waiting to see if she can recover from her injury which put her out of singles match after just one set.
