New Zealand were 22-2 at stumps on day two of their World Test Championship match on Friday at Galle International Stadium, still trailing by 580 runs after Sri Lanka racked up 602-5 declared in their first innings.

Both Black Caps openers went cheaply, with Tom Latham out for two in the first over and Devon Conway gone for nine, leaving Kane Williamson on six not out and nightwatchman Ajaz Patel scoreless after 16 balls to resume on day three.
Resuming at 306-3, Sri Lanka continued to pile up the runs, with Angelo Mathews (88 runs from 185 balls, including seven fours) and Kamindu Mendis (182 not out from 250, including 16 fours and four sixes) adding 107 runs for the fourth wicket.
Mendis and captain Dhananjaya de Silva added 74 runs, before Kusal Mendis joined the party, posting the third century of the innings, with 106 not out from 149, including six fours and three sixes, as the partnership reached 200 before declaration.
Part-time spinner Glenn Phillips took both wickets, finishing with figures of 3-141 from 38 overs as the Black Caps went almost exclusively with spinners on day two, with Tim Southee and Will O'Rourke only combining for six overs.
