Australian captain Mitchell Marsh has smashed 85 in his sides six wicket win at Bay Oval against the Black Caps in the first of three T20Is.
Set 181 the visitors eased to the win at 185-4 with 21 balls to spare.
LATEST HEADLINES:
New Zealand started badly before Tim Robinson and Daryl Mitchell had salvaged the innings and challenged the scoreboard at times in front of a reasonable crowd on a chilly night at Mt Maunganui.
Robinson came to the crease at 6-3 in the second over and finished with 106 not out from 66 balls.
Only two other New Zealand bowlers mad double figures with Daryl Mitchell pulling in 34 from 24 including a six and three fours. Bevon Jacobs on debut scored 20 from 21.
Openers Tim Seifert and Devon Conway made four and one respectively while Mark Chapman was out for a duck.
Michael Bracewll scored seven and Zak Foulkes was zero not out in the total of 181-6.
In the field the Black Caps' pace attack struggled and looked short of competitive game time with Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes and Kyle Jamison all going for over 10 runs per over.
Marsh's came to an end when he was caught by Robinson off the bowling of Henry in the 15th over, but by then the damage was done.
Travis Head made 31, Matthew Short 29 and Tim David 21 as Australia proved consistent throughout.
The second game is on Friday and third on Saturday all at Bay Oval.
